As I write this, we are inching toward the close of 2018 and the beginning of 2019. Often, this is a time of reflection—a looking back to the ways that 2018 supported our journey of becoming, and the ways that our efforts were blocked.

I remember deciding that 2018 would be a year of “saying YES” to new opportunities that came my way out of the blue. I wanted to actively choose to partner with spontaneity. I wanted to trust that my intuition and decades of experience would lead me to exciting opportunities to grow Brain-Body Health Technology Institute. As I look back on my 2018, I can say that it worked! My choice to embrace opportunity with open arms was a good one. As I contemplate 2019, I notice that my energy has shifted and I am not in quite the same expansive, wide open place. Instead, I want 2019 to represent the year of Choosing Wisely.

I see personal choice as one of the most powerful ways we can sculpt the paths our lives will take. What we choose to do, say and think within each precious 24 hours we are given can make the difference between experiencing a sense of pride and empowerment, or becoming more burdened with the shame and guilt that comes with self-betrayal. I believe that each choice we make is an opportunity to either support or betray ourselves. I know that sounds like a bold black and white statement, but I invite you to think about it.

When you are faced with a choice, do you say “yes” because you know you will be practicing radical self-care—which is NOT selfishness!—or because you believe you “should” say yes because other people’s needs are more important than your own? Do you say “yes” to helping other people before you help yourself? Do you say “yes” or “no” because you don’t believe you deserve to feel good about yourself and your life? How often do you say “yes” when you know you need to say “no”?

The choices we make are a direct reflection of how we feel about ourselves. You can choose relationships that are a reflection of loving-kindness, compassion and celebration. You can choose to cultivate a healthy relationship with your finances. You can choose to eat and drink to support the most healthy brain-body possible. You can choose to let loose and have new adventures. I know that choosing yourself is not as easy-breezy as it sounds; but, often wondering why we fail to choose wisely for ourselves can be the catalyst for change and healing. So, think about how you can make 2019 your year of choosing wisely. You won’t be sorry, and next year when you look back on 2019, you will say “Well done!”

“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.”
